Six-Beat Footwork Variations

The previous sections in this chapter have concentrated on footwork variations that are either specific to eight-beat patterns, or which can be danced as part of either an eight-beat or a six-beat pattern. This section covers variations that are specific to six-beat moves; throughout this section, beats 1 and 2 correspond to the rock step part of a normal six-beat move (Changing Places, for example).

The normal six-beat rhythm involves three two-beat units with an even-odd-odd pattern of weight changes; most of the variations in this section involve a change to this rhythm structure, using an even-even-even pattern.

Kick Ball Change
1. S:KfL Start with the dancer's weight on their right foot. The dancer performs a kick forward with their left foot.
&. S:RL The dancer replaces their weight on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
3. S:KfL The dancer performs a kick forward with their left foot.
&. S:RL The dancer replaces their weight on their left foot.
4. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
5. S:KfL The dancer performs a kick forward with their left foot.
&. S:RL The dancer replaces their weight on their left foot.
6. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
Heel Taps
1. S:BL The dancer takes a step backward on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
&. S:ThRR The dancer taps their heel in place using their right foot.
3. S:XL The dancer takes a step with their left foot across and in front of their other foot.
&. S:ThRL The dancer taps their heel in place using their left foot.
4. S:SR The dancer takes a step to the side on their right foot.
&. S:ThRR The dancer taps their heel in place using their right foot.
5. S:TL The dancer closes their left foot to their right foot.
&. S:ThRL The dancer taps their heel in place using their left foot.
6. S:FR The dancer takes a step forward on their right foot.
Breeze Knees
1. S:BL The dancer takes a step backward on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
&. S:0B The dancer bends their knees and opens out so their knees point out to the sides.
3. S:eFL The dancer takes a step slightly forward on their left foot, bringing their knees together again.
&. S:0B The dancer bends their knees and opens out so their knees point out to the sides.
4. S:eFR The dancer takes a step slightly forward on their right foot, bringing their knees together again.
&. S:0B The dancer bends their knees and opens out so their knees point out to the sides.
5. S:eFL The dancer takes a step slightly forward on their left foot, bringing their knees together again.
&. S:0B The dancer bends their knees and opens out so their knees point out to the sides.
6. S:eFR The dancer takes a step slightly forward on their right foot, bringing their knees together again.
Foot Sweeps
1. S:BL The dancer takes a step backward on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
3. S:PsL The dancer points to the side with their left foot, sweeping the left foot along the floor in a semicircle from back to front.
4. S:XL The dancer takes a step with their left foot across and in front of their other foot, completing the semicircle.
5. S:PsR The dancer points to the side with their right foot, sweeping the right foot along the floor in a semicircle from back to front.
6. S:XR The dancer takes a step with their right foot across and in front of their other foot, completing the semicircle.
Tap Behind
1. S:BL The dancer takes a step backward on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
3. S:FL The dancer takes a step forward on their left foot, jumping onto that step and extending right leg out backwards.
4. S:TaBR The dancer taps backward with their right foot.
5. S:HoRL4R The dancer hops in place on their left foot, turning 180° to their right.
6. S:FR4R The dancer takes a step forward on their right foot, continuing to turn another 180° to their right.
Side Split
1. S:BL The dancer takes a step backward on their left foot.
2. S:RR The dancer replaces their weight on their right foot.
3. S:SlSB The dancer slides along the floor to the side on both their feet.
5. S:SlTB The dancer closes both their feet to their feet.
