Flying Charleston Break

The Flying Charleston Break involves three repetitions of a movement known as the Flying Charleston. This movement is similar to the Back Charleston, but it travels sideways with a turn to the right. The Flying Charleston itself requires space to be performed effectively; two dancers performing it while facing each other means that the break as a whole needs a lot of floor space.

The move overall looks best when the dancers adjust their positions on the dance floor to maximize the visual effect. The dancers are travelling anticlockwise around a large circle on the floor, and they are facing each other or facing directly away from each other after each eight-beat subsequence.

In the sequence given, this movement is set up as follows.

  • On the first eight beats, the dancers start facing each other, then travel 90° around the large circle, each turning 90° right so that they end facing away from each other.
  • On the second eight beats, the dancers start facing away from each other, then travel 180° around the large circle, each turning 180° right so that they again end facing away from each other.
  • On the third eight beats, the dancers start facing away from each other, then travel 90° around the large circle, each turning 90° right so that they end up facing each other, back in the position that they started the move.

The final eight-beat sequence varies depending on which version of the break is performed.
