Clicking on a square will uncover that square; if there's a mine there, it's game over. If there isn't a mine, the square will show a count of the number of mines in the surrounding eight squares. Holding down the page down key while clicking on a square will mark that square as potentially containing a mine, rather than uncovering it. This will also reduce the count of the overall number of mines left to mark, shown at the top right of the screen. Holding down the page up key at the same time as clicking on an exposed square will automatically deduce whether any of the surrounding eight squares can be safely exposed or can be definitely marked as mines. This calculation is based on the flagged squares nearby, so if there are any incorrectly flagged squares, things can go awry! Double clicking on an exposed square will also do the same thing. Finally, if the 'Defuse' button at the top of the screen is pressed before clicking on a square, then the square will be dealt with in complete safety, by being marked as a definite mine or exposed as not a mine.
